When people imagine a dominatrix, one image almost always appears — a powerful woman dressed in tight black leather. From thigh-high boots and leather gloves to corsets and catsuits, leather has become the iconic clothing of dominance.
But why do dominatrixes wear leather? Where did this powerful image come from, and why has leather become such a strong symbol of authority and sensuality?
Leather has been associated with power, rebellion and sexuality for decades, and the dominatrix aesthetic is the result of several fascinating cultural influences coming together.

What Is a Dominatrix?
Being dominant and being involved in BDSM are actually two different things.
A dominant woman could simply be someone you pass in the street. She might confidently take control in her relationship or have a strong commanding personality — yet she might just be wearing jeans and a T-shirt.
Leather clothing is not required to tie someone up or give them a spanking. Yet culturally, we almost always imagine those activities involving someone dressed in leather.
So how did leather become the unofficial uniform of the dominatrix?

Why Leather Became the Symbol of Dominance
Leather clothing was originally worn for practical reasons. It is durable, strong and offers protection from the elements.
For people involved in physical activities, leather made perfect sense. It allows freedom of movement while also providing toughness and durability.
But practicality is only part of the story.
Leather also has a strong visual and sensual impact. The shine, texture and smell of leather can be incredibly appealing.
While researching this topic, I discovered two interesting terms used in psychology:
Haphephilia – sexual arousal triggered by touching certain materials, such as leather.
Doraphilia – sexual arousal caused by the smell of leather or animal fur.
For people who enjoy leather fetishism, the texture and scent of leather can be extremely stimulating. Seeing someone dressed in tight leather — or wearing it themselves — can create a powerful erotic response.
This combination of practicality, sensuality and symbolism helped make leather the perfect clothing for fetish culture.
Early Influences: Boots and Fetish Fashion
Interestingly, thigh-high leather boots were not originally designed as fetish clothing.
In the 18th and 19th centuries, they were commonly worn by men for horse riding and outdoor work in muddy conditions.
Some prostitutes discovered that wearing tall leather boots attracted attention from customers. There was something exciting about seeing a woman wearing clothing normally associated with male authority and power.
Combined with the growing fascination with leather fetish clothing, these boots gradually became part of erotic imagery.
The Rise of the Leather Dominatrix
The visual image of the leather-clad dominatrix really began to develop during the early twentieth century, particularly from the late 1940s onwards.
In the United States, motorcycle culture and the emerging gay leather scene adopted leather clothing as a symbol of rebellion and identity.
Leather jackets and trousers became associated with toughness and confidence.
At the same time, pulp magazines and underground publications began featuring powerful women dressed in tight leather outfits.
One of the most famous examples was Catwoman, whose sleek leather catsuit helped shape the modern fantasy of the leather dominatrix.
Magazines such as Bizarre featured models like Betty Page and Tana Louise, who posed in bondage-inspired leather photography that pushed the aesthetic even further.
Leather in Film and Television
By the 1960s and 1970s, leather-clad women were appearing more regularly in film and television.
In Britain, the television series The Avengers featured actresses Honor Blackman and Diana Rigg wearing striking leather outfits.
At the time, this was considered daring and provocative, but these characters helped establish leather as a symbol of powerful, confident women.
These portrayals helped cement the image of the leather-clad dominatrix in popular culture.
From Underground Culture to Mainstream Fashion
By the late 1970s and 1980s, leather clothing had moved beyond underground fetish culture and into mainstream fashion.
Leather trousers, jackets and coats became widely accepted as stylish and rebellious clothing.
Although leather still carries a slightly “kinky” reputation, it is now worn by millions of people simply as a fashionable material.
At the same time, BDSM themes have become increasingly visible in mainstream media. The enormous success of the Fifty Shades of Grey books and films shows how much curiosity now exists about dominance and fetish culture.
Despite these changes, leather remains the classic clothing of the dominatrix. It still conveys power, authority and sensuality in a way that few other materials can match.
My Personal Love of Leather
Because I wear leather so often, people sometimes assume that I must be a dominatrix.
“I bet you’ve got a bloke tied up in your dungeon somewhere,” someone joked to me recently when I was wearing leather trousers, gloves and a jacket.
Leather has become so strongly associated with dominance that many people struggle to separate the two ideas.
But despite my love of leather, I am not a dominatrix.
Although I must admit… sometimes I wish I were!
For me, leather represents confidence, sensuality and a sense of playful power. Wearing leather can instantly change the way you feel and carry yourself.
I’ve written more about my personal journey with leather in my article Coming Out In My Leathers.
It doesn’t have to be about whips, punishment or strict domination. Sometimes it is simply about feeling bold, glamorous and a little mischievous.
Of course, if I had realised earlier just how much people enjoy seeing women dressed in leather — and how much a professional dominatrix can earn — I might well be running a very luxurious dungeon somewhere in London today.
Complete with every leather accessory imaginable… and a very large wardrobe full of leather outfits.
Sadly, that remains just a fantasy!
