If you were asked to write down what you think a dominatrix would wear I am pretty sure it would be something along the lines of Thigh high leather boots with a heel. Or at least knee high boots also with a heel

A leather corset or leather catsuit. Long leather gloves a long leather coat and a military style cap that has a peak. Or something similar. So that she is covered from head to toe in leather clothing. She will also have various amounts of equipment, again , a lot of it will be leather. From a leather whip, cuffs, floggers, ball gags, masks, collars. To Leather covered furniture such as Seats, racks and even bed sheets.

Watch almost any tv show or movie which has a dominatrix in it and this is how she will inevitably be dressed.

A dominatrix is usually a professional. Who provides a bdsm service in exchange for money. They certainly need to judging by the cost of real leather clothing, acessories, furniture and chambers.

My question is have you ever wondered why leather is associated with being a dominatrix?

Why Leather?

Why leather- a simple enough question and actually not quite such a simple answer.

Being a dominant person and being into bondage (or BDSM) although practiced by a dominatrix are actually two separate things. A dominant woman can be someone you pass in the street and you see there nagging her husband. Or he is waiting on her hand and foot but she is just wearing jeans and a t-shirt. Leather clothing is not necessary to tie someone up or flog them. And yet we almost all associate these activities with a leather wearer.

Leather clothing was always originally made and worn for practical uses. It is strong and protects you from the elements.

The dominatrix of old was no different to today. She needed some sort of clothing material that would allow her to perform physical tasks and also look good at the same time.

For example, back in the very early days of the 18th & 19th centuries. Thigh-high boots were mostly worn by men for riding horses and working outside in wet and muddy conditions. Now some entrepreneurial prostitutes of the time began to realize that if they pulled on a pair of thigh-high leather boots they seemed to attract more very eager (and generous) customers. Partly because the men enjoyed seeing a woman wearing something that usually only men wore. But also because many of them back then, just as today had a fetish for leather.

A couple of new words I learnt researching this – hyphephilia and doraphilia.

Hypotheria descibes the condition where men and women are turned on by the feel and touching of certain materials, like leather.

Doraphilia describes the condition where men and women are turned on by the smell of animal fur and leather.

Ofcourse someone with a leather fetish will also be turned on just be the sight of leather on another person or wearing it themselves.

So to answer the original question – why Leather? It seems it was a mixture of leather being very practical for the activities a dominatrix carries out. It doesn’t rip easily and provides a tough outer layer to protect her. And secondly, and the most important reason, is that an awful lot of men (and many women) love the sight, sound and smell of leather. They have a leather fetish and when they see a woman dressed in tight leather (or pvc) they become tremendously turned on. They also like to wear it them selves too-if the dominatrix allows!

Origins Of The Leather Wearing Dominatrix

The general consensus seems to be that the leather-clad dominatrix came into being around the early 20th century. In particular from the late 1940s and 1950s. This probably makes sense as the production of soft leathers became much more fashionable and leather clothing began to appear in shops and clothing catalogs.

In the USA during the late 40s, there was a rise in biker gangs and as part of the gay scene, a lot of guys began wearing bike leathers as a sort of uniform to let others know they were also into bike gangs. ( see Leatherman’s HandbookII by Larry Townsend) . It was also around this time that comics started really taking off and it was no coincidence that many of the females in the comics were wearing tight costumes. This is when Catwoman appeared clad in her leather catsuit and acting like a dominatrix and launching a million fantasies that carry on to this day.

As the 1950s arrived the gay scene developed a more open attide and accepting of females as well and this leather scene remained underground and secretive. Some infamous leather clad models started to appear in risque magazines (See Bizarre magazine). With the likes of Betty page and Tana Louise becoming infamous on the leather scene.

As always the professional girls were quick to notice how excited their customers got when they wore some leather. With the rise of cinema and tv during the sixties and 70s, leather-clad dominatrix characters were portrayed more and more. With the Avengers girls, Honor Blackman and Diana Rigg wearing full leather catsuits for the first time on British television. It was all still considered very risque but leather-wearing continued to hold a kinky fascination for the majority.

It was during the late 70s and eighties that a light seems to have been shone upon the underground world of leather fetish and BDSM. Suddenly everyone wanted to wear leather and enjoyed its kinky reputation. Wearing leather pants and a coat in the eighties gave you a real sense of empowerment and sexiness. This just grew and grew, through the nineties until today where leather-wearing, thanks in part to the ever-growing internet as pretty much mainstream and going out in a leather outfit, whilst still garnering the odd kinky comment, by and large, its seen as completely mainstream and fashionable.

Leather is still very much the dominatrix clothing of choice. Your local Dominatrix knows how to entice a customer!

So if you are going to be a dominatrix you need to be empowered and feel dominant, strong, and aware of the ways to turn your customers on. Leather clothing fits the bill perfectly. And whilst I am sure there is many a dominatrix out there who doesn’t wear leather (or PVC). The vast majority do and make a very successful business out of it.

Am I A Dominatrix?

I have almost always worn leather since my late teenage years and quite often I will get called a dominatrix. “I bet you’ve got a bloke tied up in your dungeon “ I heard the other day (I wish)! And all because I was wearing leather trousers and a leather jacket and gloves. Leather is so closely associated with being a dominatrix that a lot of people don’t separate the two -being dominant and a dominatrix. To be fair the two usually go hand in hand!

Although I love my leather (as I am sure you have noticed). I am not a dominatrix. I wish I was!

For me wearing leather means and makes me feel many things. Yes, it does make me feel dominant, empowered, and sexually excited. Just as it does if I see others wearing it. But I also associate leather with other sexy situations, not just whipping, pain, and being bossy.

Now don’t get me wrong, I am pretty sure If I had been quicker to catch onto just how much guys love a lady in leather and how much a professional dominatrix can make I’m pretty sure Id have a very plush dungeon in London, or somewhere. With every leather piece of equipment you can imagine. Plus a walk-in wardrobe with every kind of leather clothing available in many shades and sizes.

Who Are The Famous Dominatrices?

Hard to say who are famous Dominatrices. Before the internet being a dominatrix and advertising your profession was not as easy as it is today. And by the very nature of it being an underground thing, something to perhaps keep quiet about it would be very hard to know if your neighbour or co worker was a dominatrix. However, the internet has certainly changed all that. A quick search in google, or through twitter will reveal thousands and thousands of women who will be claiming to be a dominatrix.

Back in the nineties, after a very long drunken night out with a girlfriend led to her confessing to me that she was in fact a dominatrix. I hadn’t guessed, although looking back – her leather heavy wardrobe, fancy car and constantly increasing jewelry collection should have been a clue lol. She came out to me as a dominatrix and offered me a spell in her dungeon ‘helping out’. Well, I jumped at the chance and had a very enjoyable time of it. All of which I shall write about in a future post on here. But I just wanted to mention it to highlight how it isn’t always obvious who is into being a dominatrix.
